How to choose the perfect dining room lamp - without common mistakes

Most people choose the dining room light last, treating it almost as a final accessory. In our experience at HBellorín, this is one of the most common and costly mistakes in interior design.

The light above the dining table is not simply the finishing touch. It is the element that determines the atmosphere of the entire room. If we choose poorly, even a beautifully designed space can feel unfinished. If we choose well, the entire interior naturally organizes itself around it.

Whether it is a compact Budapest apartment or a larger home, we apply the following basic principles in every project.

Why is the dining room light more important than you might think?

In most of the interiors we design, the dining table is the social and visual center of the home. The light placed above it consequently becomes a defining element of the entire composition.

A well-chosen light fixture creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes mealtimes feel more special. It improves the functionality of the space without making the light feel harsh, adds character and genuine design value to the interior, and establishes the right proportions in a way that few other elements can.

A poor choice - even if it is only a slight disproportion - can make the space feel unfinished. We regularly encounter this in our renovation projects: every other detail has been carefully considered, while the light is chosen online in five minutes.

Step 1: Choose the right size - proportions determine everything

This is one of the most common mistakes we encounter: the light is too small.

This is particularly true of Budapest apartments, where ceiling height can vary considerably depending on the age and type of building - from the high-ceilinged apartments in Art Nouveau buildings like the Bedő House to the lower-ceilinged spaces of prefabricated panel buildings. As a result, determining the right proportions is not a matter of a simple formula, but a design decision.

However, the following dimensions provide a useful starting point:

Small, up to 120 cm table: a compact pendant light or a single light fixture.
Medium, 160–180 cm table: a medium-sized or large pendant light. This is one of the most common dining table sizes in Budapest apartments.
Large, 200 cm or longer table: a distinctive, statement light fixture or two or three pendant lights arranged in a line.

As a general rule, the lamp's diameter should be approximately half to two-thirds of the table's width. A lamp that is too small looks uncertain and insignificant. A properly sized light fixture, on the other hand, naturally defines the dining area and visually brings the space together.

Step 2: Find the right hanging height

The height of the lamp has a greater impact on comfort and the atmosphere of the space than most people realize.

The ideal distance between the tabletop and the lowest point of the lamp is 70–90 cm.

Below 70 cm, the lamp may feel uncomfortably low. Above 90 cm, the intimate connection between the lamp and the table that creates such a pleasant atmosphere in the dining room is lost.

In spaces with higher ceilings – such as the historic Budapest buildings where we have completed several projects – we sometimes increase this distance slightly. The goal, however, is always the same: to preserve the visual connection between the lamp and the dining table below it.

Never position the dining room lamp at the height of a general ceiling light. A dining pendant lamp belongs to the table, not the entire room.

Step 3: Choose the right light quality

Not all light is the same, and in the dining room, the difference is immediately noticeable.

Choose a warm color temperature of around 2700 K. In this light, food looks more appetizing, while skin tones appear more natural and warmer. Prefer diffused light, and avoid strong downward lighting directed straight at faces. It is also important for the light to illuminate the entire table evenly, not just its central area.

Cool, sterile light with a color temperature of 4000 K or higher is better suited to kitchens and work areas, not above a dining table where people eat and talk together.

If possible, choose a light fixture compatible with a dimmer. Reducing the light intensity in the evening can completely transform the atmosphere of the space and the dining experience.

Step 4: Treat style as a space-shaping decision, not merely as decoration

This is what sets HBellorín’s design approach apart from simply leafing through a catalogue.

We do not choose a light because it is beautiful on its own. We choose it because it works properly in the space: it harmonizes with the shape of the table, the ceiling height, the materials of the walls and floor, and the overall character of the home.

For minimalist interiors, we recommend clean, geometric light fixtures with understated details. In warm-toned, material-rich spaces, textured forms made of rattan, concrete, or natural fibers work particularly well. In contemporary or characterful interiors, we choose sculptural light fixtures that define the space as independent visual elements.

In the Budapest Elysium project, we treated the lighting as one of the defining elements of the overall composition. Not as decoration added at the end of the design, but as a space-shaping decision made at the very beginning of the process. That is the difference.

Every piece in the Bazziko collection is selected according to this same way of thinking. Not because it looks good in a photograph, but because it works well in real interiors too.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

The most common mistake we encounter is choosing a light that is too small for the table. If the light is hung too high, the dining area loses its intimate atmosphere. Cool or overly bright light above 3000 K can ruin the atmosphere almost instantly. Ignoring the proportion between the light’s diameter and the table’s width creates visual imbalance.

When we treat the light as mere decoration rather than a defining element of the space, the interior can easily feel unfinished. Ignoring dimmability also significantly reduces the flexibility of the lighting and, with it, the ways the space can be used.

Our design advice

When you are unsure between two sizes, choose the larger one. In our experience, the natural instinct to choose a smaller light for safety almost always leads to an overly understated result.

Think of your dining room light as the room’s visual focal point. Every other element - the table, chairs, and artwork on the walls - will relate to it in some way.

Evaluate proportions first, and style only afterward. A well-proportioned lamp, even in a secondary style, will always work better than a beautiful but poorly sized piece.

Frequently asked questions

What size lamp should I choose above the dining table?
Ideally, the lamp’s diameter should be between half and two-thirds of the table’s width. For an average dining table 160–180 cm long, we generally recommend a medium or large pendant light.

At what height should a dining pendant light be hung?
Ideally, there should be a distance of 70–90 cm between the bottom of the lamp and the tabletop. This can be increased slightly in rooms with higher ceilings, but it is always important to preserve the visual connection between the lamp and the table.

Should I choose warm or cool light for the dining area?
Warm light around 2700 K is ideal for the dining area. It makes food look more appetizing, skin tones appear warmer, and creates a pleasant, inviting atmosphere instead of a sterile feel.

Can I use multiple lights instead of a single fixture?
Yes. We often recommend this for tables longer than 180 cm. Two or three pendant lights arranged in a line create more even light distribution and a stronger visual rhythm than a single central fixture.

What lamp shape works best with a rectangular dining table?
Linear or elongated light fixtures, as well as multiple pendant lights arranged along the length of the table, work best. A single round pendant placed in the center of a long, rectangular table often looks disproportionate.

Does the lamp’s style need to match the table exactly?
They do not need to match exactly, but they should relate to each other. If the lamp’s scale, materials, or character conflicts with the table, visual tension can arise. The goal is harmony, not uniformity.
