5 common lighting mistakes that keep your home from feeling truly harmonious - and how to fix them
If one of the rooms in your home never feels truly harmonious for some reason, despite the furniture being well chosen and the colors being in balance, the lighting is almost always the reason.
At HBellorin, this is one of the first things we examine during an on-site consultation. The furniture may be excellent and the layout carefully considered, yet a single lighting mistake can make the interior feel flat, cold, or unfinished.
The good news is that these mistakes occur repeatedly. We encounter the same five problems again and again in Budapest apartments and homes - and each one can be corrected.
Why are lighting mistakes more important than most people think?
Lighting is not merely a functional element. It determines how we perceive a space on every level: from the warmth of the atmosphere to the way materials and colors appear in the room.
A well-lit space feels balanced and natural. A poorly lit space, however, feels disjointed, regardless of how carefully we selected the other elements. Most people sense that something is wrong but cannot pinpoint the cause. This is because we often perceive lighting mistakes before we consciously notice them.
1. mistake: Relying on a single light source
Using a single central ceiling light is one of the most common lighting solutions in Hungarian homes - and it is almost always insufficient.
A single light coming from above creates flat, even illumination without depth, shadows, or warmth. It treats the room merely as a functional space rather than an environment where people actually live.
At HBellorin, we work with at least three types of light sources in every important living space. Ambient lighting provides the general base light. Task lighting supports specific activities such as reading or working. Accent lighting adds depth to the space, highlights materials, and creates the desired atmosphere.
When these layers of lighting work together, the space comes alive. When only one layer is present, everything creates the same effect, regardless of the time of day.

2. mistake: Choosing the wrong color temperature
The color of light directly affects the mood a room conveys, yet this is one of the most frequently overlooked aspects of planning home lighting.
Cool light around 5000 K creates a sterile and overly harsh effect in living spaces. It may be suitable in healthcare environments or technical work areas, but not in rooms where we relax, eat, or sleep. In a Budapest apartment with plastered walls and wooden floors, cool light completely removes the natural warmth of the materials.
Warm light around 2700 K has the opposite effect. It makes skin tones look more natural, food appear more appetizing, and materials look richer and more pleasant. In our projects, we use warm light by default in the main living areas and dining rooms. We use more neutral or cooler light mainly in kitchens and areas specifically designed for work.

3. mistake: Poor placement and unsuitable height
A lamp that looks beautiful in a catalog can have an entirely wrong effect in a real space if it is placed at the wrong height or in the wrong location.
One of the most common mistakes we encounter is placing pendant lights above dining tables too high. This visually separates the lamp from the surface it should illuminate, causing the space to lose its intimate atmosphere.
For dining tables, it is ideal to leave a distance of 70–90 cm between the bottom of the lamp and the tabletop. For bedside lighting, the lamp should be placed at a height that provides comfortable reading light without shining directly into the eyes. Wall lights should always be positioned according to eye level and the activity carried out in the area.
Well-placed lighting works almost unnoticed. When it is placed incorrectly, however, it is one of the first things we notice in a space - even if we cannot articulate exactly why.
